I thought that might grab your attention. I’m not sure I think it’s realistic or probable but I certainly think it’s time to start talking about it. I imagine almost all of us are sitting at home right now. So, maybe we should start batting around some ideas and brainstorm a plan or two.
The fact is, we might not be meeting in person for some time, and naturally I thought that, once again, this is the perfect venue to do just that…continue the link we have and interaction on which our Guild was founded.
So, not only as Council Members, but also as colleagues, we are faced with something I think would benefit us all if we all participated in it here. What should we do? We, as union members, are always, to varying degrees, going to have a certain responsibility to other members in acting on their behalf to better any situation.
That time is definitely now.
Of course if someone isn’t working, there wouldn’t be anything on which to apply dues. However there is still the minimums to consider, and possibly waiving them. Maybe this would be the occasion to have every quarter’s dues be based on earnings above $10,000, like they are in the first quarter. Maybe?
I, for one, think it’s also the time where the Networks should be thinking less about profit and more about breaking even. Less about the shareholders and more about the employee.
We Freelancers are, and will always be a little more susceptible to unforeseen and unpredictable forces like the one we are seeing now. We are without a safety net, like we are with only ever a weekly deal memo on which to depend. We can be let go or fired for most any reason, or none at all.
I am going to open this site up to every Council Member, East and West, as Authors, and thereby permitting them to contribute here as they see fit. Then, as always with a consensus, we can pursue things responsibly with the DGA Staff in addressing our most basic, and our most important goals.
Sincerely,
DS.
Hey Doug,
I actually think this is a really great idea… I, for one, I am pretty much retired but still know how this is affecting my brothers and sisters in the Guild. Let me know what I can do.
